Northern Europe — 2028

Sweden

Sweden links waste incineration to district heating, which makes energy recovery genuinely useful and also creates a long-lived appetite for combustible material. Both halves of that sentence matter.
Future missionUnder consideration for a later phase of the programme.

Research question

When energy recovery infrastructure is built to last forty years, does it compete with waste reduction?

Written before the mission, and published unchanged. Findings are assessed against this question rather than the question being rewritten to fit the findings.

Research scope

District heating and the incineration question

What we want to understand

  1. 01How incineration capacity is matched to heat demand across a year.
  2. 02Whether imported waste sustains capacity that domestic waste no longer fills.
  3. 03How recycling targets and incineration capacity are reconciled in policy.
  4. 04What emissions and ash handling actually involve.
  5. 05Whether the model transfers anywhere without a cold climate and heat networks.

Missions

No mission scheduled

This country is on the roadmap but no mission has been planned in detail yet.

Findings

No findings yet

Field research in Sweden is future mission. This section stays empty until there is something we have actually seen. The questions above are what we will be asking.

What India could take from Sweden

Assessment pending

Any judgement about transfer to India would be speculation until the system has been seen working, and its costs and dependencies understood. Anything published here will be labelled as a proposal until a pilot reports.

What Sweden could take from India

Nothing has been researched yet, so nothing is claimed. These are the parts of India’s experience we expect to be worth putting in front of practitioners here, and what we will ask them about.

  • Organic and material recovery where energy recovery is not the default outlet.
  • Operating without district heating as the anchor for residual waste.

Read the reasoning on why this is a two-way journey.

Case studies

No case studies yet

Case studies are published from field research, with sources and limitations.

Film and clips

Nothing filmed yet

Filming follows the field visit. Clip subjects are planned in advance and listed on the clips page.
